3 Email List Building Mistakes You Want To Avoid

Email list building is both simple and complex. The general principles of list building are simple but it is in the details where mistakes are made. The devil is in the details. While there are dozens of mistakes you can make when building your email list, there are 3 major mistakes you can learn to avoid by reading this post.

If you are new to email list building you should definitely read my free ebook that many people find helpful: The Basics of List Building.

If you don’t want to download it through the above link right now, which I recommend you do, you can decide to do it while reading any of the following posts about list building:

Avoid 3 Email List Building Mistakes Now

After learning the Basics of List Building you will have an opt in form on your blog and perhaps a squeeze page on your product download site. You will have started collecting leads to your email list. I will not be covering any of this in this post.

What I will discuss in this post is the major mistakes people make in how they treat the people on their list because that is the part of list building that is crucial, that doesn’t get talked about much and that can completely negate any efforts put into list building.

Email List Building Mistake #1

Sending Pitching Emails Too Frequently

Many internet marketers send promotional emails virtually every day to their newly acquired subscribers. They have hardly built any relationship with the people on their list and they ruthlessly bombard them with one sales pitch after another.

The product that they raved about the day before is trumped by the product they promote today and so on.

This very quickly leads to the subscribers being burned and upset and they either hit the unsubscribe button or they become immune to any emails from this particular marketer and never bother to read them.

Email List Building Mistake #2

Not Giving Good Value For Free

While informing your subscribers of great offers that they have shown interest in receiving and getting paid a commission if they decide to buy them is a good and legitimate service, the people on your list also expect value from you that is free to them.

If you only send emails to your subscribers when you have something for sale, they will not be very responsive to your offers.

Giving away free value in your emails to your list more often than sending emails with paid offers will cultivate a much better and responsive list.

Email List Building Mistake #3

Neglecting Your Email List Subscribers

Pay a close attention here too. This is the least discussed mistake and one of the most prevalent ones right next to the two mistakes listed above and one that I’m most guilty of.

People who commit this mistake are those that are afraid of making mistakes #1 and #2.

The consequences of this mistake are less damaging to the subscribers because they aren’t bothered by your emails. A few of them will be bothered by not getting emails from you but most of them will just forget about you completely.

So how does one neglect their subscribers?

I my case I hate bothering people with too many emails. I tend to hesitate very much before I email them any offer. And I ponder a long time about whether they’d find what I feel like sending them for free of great value.

I was astonished recently after sending an email about a free webinar when one of the people who unsubscribed left a comment saying “I don’t remember who Vance is”.

When I thought about it though I quickly realized that not keeping in regular touch with the people on my email list will inevitably lead to them forgetting about me altogether.

So it is important not to be too shy in getting in touch with the people on your email list. After all they want to hear from you.

What To Do Next?

Let me know what you think about the 3 email list building mistakes.

Have you made any of them yourself?

Which mistake do you think is the worst one to make?

Your comment is very important so do go ahead and make it.

Internet Marketer Lee McIntyre Speaks In Vancouver Marketing Event

Internet marketing events are a great place to learn and to meet people at various skill levels. These events are also an incredible opportunity to network. Networking at Canada Marketing Summit during the four days from Thursday to Sunday was one such opportunity.

The chance of Meeting and chatting with people like Lee McIntyre, Maritza Parra, Mark Victor Hansen, Scott Rewick, Austin Walsh, Anthony Morrison, Colin Wiebe, Jeff Mills, Riel Roussopoulos, Jason Bax, Jeff Vacek and 5 other great individuals, in addition to hearing their live presentations, is something that cannot be done over the internet and that any aspiring internet marketer should aim at experiencing.

I wasn’t kidding in Succeed Online By Networking At Internet Marketing Events when I said that I was going to take every opportunity to attend and network at live internet marketing events and write about them on my blog.

Canada Marketing Summit was by far the best event that I’ve attended so far.

I must admit that I knew very little or nothing about most of the speakers prior to the event with the notable exception of Lee McIntyre. Learning that he’d be there was an extra incentive for me to be present.

My first brief chat with Lee McIntyre video:

I will post two more videos of Lee McIntyre telling his story below but before I do that let me tell you that All the speakers that I mentioned above and the 4 presenters I haven’t mentioned yet: Dan Lok, Marias Gudelis, Rick Raddatz and Jennifer Hanczel were all fabulous.

All four days of this live internet marketing event so aptly named Canada Marketing Summit (at least half a dozen of the speakers are Canadians) were jam-packed with great information, outstanding speaking performances and intensive networking and fun.

Lee McIntyre’s Story Video 2

In addition to great content from speakers like Lee McIntyre which you can see a small sample of on the above videos there was a great time to be had meeting and networking with everyone attending the live event.

It’s important to get out of ones shell and take the initiative first to introduce yourself to as many people as possible. I did a much better job now than at the previous significant and big internet marketing event I attended last January. Having said that, there is still a lot of room for improvement.

By the way I respect and like the big internet marketing events and I also like and respect small local internet marketing meetings like John Chow’s Dot Com Pho. It’s important for you to realize that any live networking with other internet marketers is extremely valuable.

After the first day and the first four speakers and a two hour break there was a networking warm up party free to all participants which provided an additional chance to network and have some fun. You may want to watch the video below which will give you an idea of what the evening was like.

Spandy Andy at Networking Warm Up Party at Canada Marketing Summit Video

Who is Spandy Andy on the video above? Spandy Andy is a bright young Vancouverite. This is what he says about himself:

“I love to entertain. Making people laugh, smile, or even give me a bizarre stare, is so fulfilling…By being Spandy Andy I put myself out there to show the world you don’t have to be afraid.”

After the last speaker of Canada Marketing Summit finished speaking, the networking with the attending internet marketers wasn’t over yet.

People hung around or went to a nearby restaurant or a pub to share their impressions, thoughts and ideas about their next moves and plans.

And after 7 p.m. there was an optional dinner and entertainment party and more networking and fun at the hotel ballroom which many speakers and the internet marketing event attendees took part in.

I got to meet with Lee McIntyre again and we had a chat while drinking beer. I met other people and spent fun time with Jit Uppal and some new and old friends.

Now it’s your turn to make a comment on this topic of internet marketing events, this particular event and the videos.

What appeals to you the most about internet marketing live events?

Which IM event have you attended most recently and which one if any do you plan to attend next?

What video on this page did you like the best?

After you submit your comment make sure you tweet and bookmark the post and thus share it with others and engage them in the conversation.

What are the top 10 blogs that send traffic? I bet that you want to know how to get blog traffic and get it fast. Wouldn’t it be great to know the secret traffic blogs that are sending the most visitors?

There is one blogger that I know of and have a great respect for who from time to time makes a video mentioning which were the top 10 blogs during a period of a month that sent her the most traffic. The top 10 blogs of course change all the time.

I’m proud to say that for the period from May 15 to June 15, 2010 the very blog you are reading now was the number one blog that sent Sally Neill the most traffic.

You can check the video showing the top ten blogs sending traffic to find out what Sally has to say about me and my blog and the runner ups.

What did I do to send Sally the most traffic over a period of a month?

How To Become A Blog Traffic Magnet

What I did was both purposeful and accidental but looking back it can be easily replicated at any time by anyone. When I say accidental I mean that I never expected the results to be so good.

1) I  created an information product, my first ebook The Basics Of List Building.

2) I  posted about the topic of the ebook and about the ebook before it was released in my post called Email List Building, Opt in List, Not Just for Internet Marketer.

3) I wrote a post Email List Building Ebook, How To Build Email List In Any Market which highlighted my new ebook after I published it.

4) I made comments on three or four dozen blogs that I like to read.

That’s about it.

Of course I do respond to comments that my blog readers leave and thus keep the communication going.

My then just released new list building ebook attracted tons of traffic. A portion of that traffic was passed on to Sally’s blog.

But how was the traffic from my blog getting to be passed on to Sally?

How To Get Traffic From Secret Traffic Blogs

The way Sally got so much traffic from my blog and the way you can get traffic from secret traffic blogs is very simple but not that easy.

It is a way that I’ve covered before in Increase Blog Traffic Using Comments. Sally was commenting a lot on my blog because she liked my new ebook and what I was writing about.

It was just at that time that my blog was getting extra large amounts of traffic and a significant portion of those visitors noticed the high quality comments Sally was making.

Naturally they became curious about what else she had to say and went over to her blog.

Commenting is not the easiest way to get traffic because your comments need to be valuable if they are going to attract people to your blog and that takes time and hard work.

So what are the secret traffic blogs? If you watched the video on Sally’s blog you’ve got an idea. But really, any blog with a content you like can become a secret traffic blog at any time.

Top 10 traffic sending blogs for you can be the same ones that were the top secret traffic blogs for Sally but they can be a completely different set of blogs.

The key thing to keep in mind is that no top traffic sending blog will send you any traffic unless you take the initiative and work hard for it.

There is of course always paid traffic but that is another subject.

Do you keep track of your own top 10 traffic sending blogs?

Have you used commenting to get traffic?

If not, will you consider it after reading this post?

Please leave your comments and bookmark and tweet this post so others can join the discussion.
